Steel beam span calculator

I've found span calculators for wooden floor joists, etc., on the internet, but nothing similar for steel I-beams (except for folks trying to sell software or books). I've calculated that for 15 lb. deadload and 30 lb. 'live' load, I can span at least 9' with 2x6 southern pine on 16" centers for floor joists..

Notes. 1. The deflection calculations use average wood stiffness properties of clear, straight-grained samples measured in controlled laboratory conditions (mainly from the U.S. Forest Products Lab). Expect some real-life variation from the calculated results. 2.The eye will notice a deflection of 1/32″ (0.03″) per running foot, or 3/32″ (0.09″) for a 3′ wide …You’ll first need to calculate the volume of the parallel-flanged I-beam, and you can do so via the following equation: V1 = (W x FT x L) x 2. V2 = (H – (2 x FT)) x WT x L. V3 = ( (R x 2) 2 – (π x R 2 )) x L. Overall Volume = V1 + V2 + V3. The above H beam weight formula consists of the following elements: V1 = The flange volume part of ...W-beams - wide flange beams - are stout, sturdy beams with wide flanges positioned perpendicularly to the web of the material giving them their characteristic shape and distinguishing them from I-beams. The Steel Beam Sizes Chart is an interactive table that lists the dimensional and geometric properties of a section. These properties can help engineers find the desired steel section they are looking for. Simply select your unit system, library before selecting a shape to display that shape's beam dimensions. The library contains sections from ...The above steel beam span calculator is a versatile structural engineering tool used to calculate the bending moment in an aluminium, wood or steel beam. It can also be used as a beam load capacity calculator by using it as a bending stress or shear stress calculator. For example, the deflection ratio for 0.5" delection over a 12' beam is: L / 288 = 12ft x 12 in/ft (span) / 0.5 in (deflection) Now consider a beam that deflects 0.75" and is 18' long. It has an equivalent deflection ratio of L/288. In theory, these beams have the same deflection performance even though the longer span beam has a greater ...1.1) Steel beam span length This is the effective span length of the beam, the distance from the centre of one end bearing to the centre of the other end bearing. For example, if the clear distance between supports is 3m …Welcome to our Free Beam Calculator! Our calculator generates the Reactions, Shear Force Diagrams (SFD), Bending Moment Diagrams (BMD), deflection, and stress of a cantilever beam or simply supported beam.

The basement is only 7’ tall, so the deck beams need to be as short as possible with the fewest amount of support posts (hence the steel beams). Additionally, I’d like the steel H beams (2 total) to span 20’ between 2 support posts, with an overall beam length of 24’ (extending 2’ past each post).
