From jayhawkers to Jayhawks: The 1890 University of Kansas football team was known as the "Jayhawkers," but later the university shortened its sports name to simply "Jayhawks." By the 1910s, the Jayhawk had become synonomous with a mythical bird; nonetheless, the historical connections are undeniable.There are references to Jayhawkers in Texas history, which may be of an earlier date, but are not authenticated. The name became common during the territorial troubles and was at first applied to both sides. Jennison's regiment of Free-state men, as well as Quantrill's raiders, were at one time called Jayhawkers.The men had known each other for more than a decade by this time, dating back to Hickok’s stint with the Kansas jayhawkers.
