You can sneak attack when you have advantage OR there's a friendly unit next to the target. But you can't sneak attack at all if you have disadvantage. BG3 doesn't tell you about the friendly unit or the disadvantage, but it's the way it works in 5e and they implemented it correctly. Do note that you can only sneak attack once per turn.
