Because from experience, heading into the hospital at 6 centimeters dilated with contractions two minutes apart and then giving birth three hours later without needing an induction is infinitely preferable to walking into a scheduled induction at less than 3 centimeters dilated with zero contractions and giving birth 19 hours later.

To answer your question, I was 4 cm dilated at 35 weeks and yes my doctor sent me home from that appt where we discovered just how dilated I was. The difference was though that I wasn't in labour or having any contractions. I was checked again at 38 weeks, at which stage I was 5 cm, still no labour. Again I was sent home.
